Stoke City finally have lift-off as Ethan Galbraith seals crucial win over Norwich

Stoke City finally have their first Championship points of the season after Ethan Galbraith's first-half strike secured a 1-0 victory over Norwich City at the bet365 Stadium.

The Potters went into Tuesday night's game under pressure after losing their opening three league matches, including a heavy 4-1 defeat away at Wolves on Saturday.

But Mark Robins' side produced a much-needed response in front of the home supporters, changing to a three-at-the-back system and showing considerably more resilience than they had during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Stoke took the lead after just 13 minutes.

Eric Bocat's low cross was deflected into the path of Galbraith, who struck from outside the box. His effort took a touch off Norwich defender Jack Stacey before finding the bottom corner.

It was enough to give Stoke a precious early advantage.

Norwich, fresh from a 4-1 victory over Burnley at the weekend, responded strongly and created several opportunities before half-time.

Andre Brooks had a particularly good chance to level when he was played through one-on-one, but Viktor Johansson produced an excellent save with his outstretched leg to deny the Norwich attacker.

Kenny McLean also came close, curling an effort narrowly wide as Norwich began to dominate possession.

Stoke went into the interval still ahead, despite Norwich enjoying more than 70 per cent possession during the match.

The second half saw Norwich continue to push for an equaliser, but Stoke's defensive shape held firm.

Johansson was again called upon to keep the visitors out, saving from McLean and gathering a header from Anthony Musaba.

At the other end, Stoke had opportunities to put the game beyond Norwich.

Deadline-day signing Luca Bombino came close to doubling the advantage after being played in by Robert Bozenik and Sam Gallagher, but his effort was tipped over by Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic.

Norwich continued to press during the closing stages, but Stoke refused to buckle.

The final whistle brought a huge sense of relief around the bet365 Stadium as Stoke secured their first league victory of the season.

The result is particularly important given the Potters' difficult start. Before Tuesday night, Stoke had lost all three of their Championship fixtures and conceded nine goals.

Robins' tactical switch clearly paid dividends, with Stoke looking far more organised and difficult to break down.

The victory also gives Stoke three points from their opening four league matches and, perhaps more importantly, something positive to build on after a difficult opening month.

For Galbraith, the goal capped an important evening as his strike proved to be the difference between the two sides.

And for Stoke supporters, after the disappointment of the opening three games, there was finally something to celebrate at the bet365 Stadium.

The Potters will now hope Tuesday night's victory can provide the platform for a much-needed improvement in their Championship campaign.
