A shopper has raised concerns after visiting the Big Asda store in Tunstall early this morning and finding that no staffed checkouts were open.
The customer, who arrived at around 7.45am, says they were waiting alongside two other shoppers while others queued for the self-service machines. After asking if a staffed till could be opened, they were reportedly told that management was not allowing the checkouts to open.
The shopper praised the Asda staff for being supportive, with a staffed checkout eventually opened for customers.
However, they also claim a member of staff mentioned possible plans to remove staffed tills and a change involving a 10am opening time. These claims have not been confirmed by Asda, and it remains unclear whether the reported 10am time relates to the store itself or staffed checkouts.
While self-service tills work well for many shoppers, others prefer, or need the assistance of a member of staff.
Six Towns Daily would welcome clarification from Asda about whether any changes are planned at the Tunstall store.
