‘More Planning Needed’ After Devastating Stoke-on-Trent Wildfire

The devastating wildfire in Sandyford and Goldenhill, Stoke-on-Trent, has highlighted the serious risks posed by wildfires during hot, dry and windy weather.

The fire began in Sandyford Park before spreading rapidly towards homes on Sandy Road and Maureen Avenue. Four homes were severely damaged, while residents were forced to leave their properties as firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control.

The incident has underlined the need for better preparation for wildfires in Stoke-on-Trent, particularly when dry conditions allow flames to spread extremely quickly. The fire service later found that the blaze had been accidentally started by a disposable barbecue.

With the Sandyford and Goldenhill fire causing significant damage to homes and displacing local families, concerns remain about how communities can be better prepared for similar incidents in the future.

The Sandyford and Goldenhill blaze is not an isolated incident in the area this summer. Other significant wildfires have been tackled across Stoke-on-Trent, including at Park Hall Country Park, where firefighters dealt with multiple grassland fires in July and another large scrubland and grassland fire in August. A further wildfire at Causeley Road in Bucknall in July involved around 200 metres by 200 metres of grass and shrubland. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has described demand across the county this summer as unprecedented.

Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service has warned that the demand placed on crews during the recent hot weather has been “unprecedented”. The service has attended a number of wildfires across Stoke-on-Trent, including a large blaze at Park Hall Country Park where eight appliances and two specialist wildfire vehicles were deployed. Firefighters have urged people to take extra care during dry weather, warning that fires can spread extremely quickly and place significant pressure on emergency resources.
